March’s Article of the Month from AAS

About a month ago ArcheAge-Online.com and ArcheAgeSource.com announced a monthly cross-promotion event. What both sites want is interesting, original content and articles written by enthusiastic ArcheAge fans. In order to encourage hesitant writers, ArcheAgeSource.com’s administrator has decided to reward one article writer per month with ArcheAge-themed swag, while we here at ArcheAge-Online.com have offered to “feature” the article on our front page.

The following example is the second article to be featured. It was written by a single AAS member: Shinaji. Follow the “continue reading” link to see it!

ArcheAge does use CryENGINE 3, XLGames confirms.

According to an article by ThisIsGame (a reputable South Korean videogame news site), ArcheAge does in fact use CryENGINE 3. We had speculated on the meaning of XLGames’ appearance in one of Crytek’s CryENGINE 3 promotional videos a few weeks ago. Now we know for sure that our favorite MMO does, in fact, make use of parts of the updated engine.

Since its original unveiling, ArcheAge had always billed itself as the premier CryENGINE 2 MMO. Now that XLGames has upgraded to the newer engine, ArcheAge’s claim to graphics fame continues to endure.

It doesn’t seem that XLGames had any difficulties switching from CryENGINE 2 to CryENGINE 3. The two engines are incredibly similar. For now ArcheAge’s CryENGINE 3 code is limited to graphics, animation, and physics. Networking and other miscellaneous subroutines remain unchanged.

XLGames won’t put the CryENGINE 3 label on ArcheAge until Open Beta.

A second set of answers to community questions!

XLGames is doing something similar to what ArcheAgeSource.com did just a little while ago: ask the community what they want to know, and then delivering answers to the best questions! The first set of questions and answers were released last week, and we had them translated and ready for prime-time. Here we go again!

Are there race-specific quests or storylines?
ArcheAge has two major types of quests: local quests, which normally have to do with a very specific problem, and regional quests, which deal with larger issues. Depending on your character’s race or an area’s political allegiance, you might not be able to participate in some quests. However, regardless of your alignment, the most important storyline quests will still be available to complete. Of course there will be race-specific quests and lore that will help flesh out ArcheAge’s universe and explain why each race exists, what they want, and where they’re going. Every race has a different story to tell!

Can players design their own houses (create their own architecture)?
Building a house in ArcheAge is simplified from real life a bit. You buy a blueprint and purchase or gather the necessary supplies, then begin building. You can’t move the position of windows and doors just yet, but XLGames is working on creating enough interesting house designs (big, small, wide, tall) so that towns won’t become monotonous. One of XLGame’s current ideas is to create different house designs for each race, and they’re trying to deliver that particular feature by Open Beta (which should be in November this year).

Can players, pets, or NPCs get sick?
Yes, there are some illnesses that both NPCs and players can contract. If you wander into a town that’s full of infected characters, you’ll probably catch something yourself! Then again, you could get sick on purpose and then pay a visit to someone you don’t really like, but that’s risky in it’s own way…

Is there really a Leviathan, or other sea monsters, in the ocean?
Yes, there really are sea-monsters in ArcheAge waiting to take a bite out of you or your ship. Some like to stay near the surface while others hide in the depths. A few grow to gigantic sizes. All of them can ruin your day.

Why do the footprints of Elves glow?
Why not? Each race in ArcheAge has unique quirks, including different running styles and footprints. Also, differences in climate and environment can effect footprint effects (running on sand leaves different footprints than running on snow).

Is there a title or achievement system in ArcheAge? What kind of rewards do players get for progression?
XLGames encourages players to take ArcheAge at their own speed, and there are great rewards for all kinds of actions in every are. If you complete all the quests in a region you might gain a title, but there’s more to rewards than just that. Often one quest will dovetail into another, which itself is the reward. Additionally, each area has its own quest rewards, which are sometimes unique to that area. If you help a tailor, he might give you the design for his special cloth armor.

Rumor Mill: Tencent’s future with ArcheAge in doubt.

As you might already know, last year Tencent had been announced as ArcheAge’s official publisher in China. The price Tencent allegedly paid for the rights to our favorite MMO was somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 million US dollars (the biggest MMO publishing deal in China since Aion). That partnership now seems to have been thrown into doubt, if you believe some Chinese news sites.

What happened? Apparently the news article about the deal was removed from ArcheAge.com, ArcheAge’s official Korean website. This has caused many to speculate that the deal has been called off. If so, some analysts believe it’s unlikely that XLGames will get such an abundant offer from a different publisher.

The publishing rights to Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan are owned by GigaMedia Limited.
